Clown Duende

"Duende" often designates a figure of folklore, a being belonging to the little folk called ”goblins", "pixies", "brownies", "elves", or "leprechauns" in English — “lutins”, “farfadets”, “elfes”, “korrigans”, “esprits du foyer” in French. In ancient Roman religion, there were the Penates, which were household deities. In Spanish "duende" originated as a contraction of the phrase "dueñ(o) de casa", effectively "master of the house", a protecting spirit inhabiting a dwelling.

When our outer and inner environment are in harmony, taking care of and respected, "duende" manifests itself and brings blessings. If not, this energy reflects the situation and could be harmful.

Although "duende" can not really be defined, it has evolved and passed through time and cultures. When it enters the life of an individual, she or he can not assert that it belongs to her or him, but only be grateful for experiencing this fleeting moment of inspiration and grace. Or as the French saying goes: "un ange passe".

Clown evokes the paradox of deep sadness and joy united. Clown is present. Ordinary and simple. Letting things be, come and go. Unbearable tenderness. Dancing with the sky's vastness, the sound of laughter arises and disappears.

“A clown is a poet in action. He is the story which he enacts. [...] The clown teaches us to laugh at ourselves. [...] Joy is like a river: it flows ceaselessly. It seems to me that this is the message which the clown is trying to convey to us, that we should participate through the ceaseless flow and movement, that we should not stop to reflect, compare, analyze, possess, but flow on and through, endlessly, like music. This is the gift of surrender, and the clown makes it symbolically.”~ Henry Miller, “The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder”
